Thymosin Alpha-1 (Tα1) is a naturally occurring 28-amino-acid N-terminally acetylated peptide originally isolated from thymosin fraction 5 (TF5) of bovine thymus gland. It is the processed product of the thymosin α1 precursor protein and is detectable in human serum, where it plays a role in immune regulation.
In T-cell culture models, Tα1 has been studied for its effects on T-lymphocyte maturation and activation — specifically, apparent increases in T-cell surface marker expression (CD3, CD4, CD8), IL-2 production, and cytotoxic T-cell activity. It is thought to interact with toll-like receptor 9 (TLR9) signalling in dendritic cell co-culture models, influencing downstream IFN-α production.
Thymosin Alpha-1 is used as a research tool for studying thymic-peptide immunomodulation, T-cell differentiation signalling, and TLR-mediated innate immune pathway activation in vitro.
