Thymalin is a peptide bioregulator complex derived from bovine thymus gland extract. Unlike single-sequence synthetic peptides, it consists of a low-molecular-weight polypeptide fraction (predominantly <10 kDa) isolated and refined from thymic tissue — a source historically associated with T-lymphocyte maturation and immunological homeostasis research.
In vitro, thymalin preparations have been studied for their apparent ability to modulate T-lymphocyte activity in cell-culture models — including effects on IL-2 production, T-cell proliferation, and natural killer (NK) cell activity in immunological assay systems.
As part of the broader peptide-bioregulator research programme developed at the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology, thymalin has been referenced in the ageing-immunology literature in the context of thymic involution and age-related immune dysfunction models.
