Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro) derived from the immunomodulatory tetrapeptide tuftsin (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg) with a C-terminal Pro-Gly-Pro extension that substantially improves metabolic stability against enzymatic degradation. It was developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
In cell-culture and brain-tissue models, Selank has been studied for interactions with the GABA-A receptor complex, including apparent interactions at the benzodiazepine-binding site — placing it in the research context of allosteric modulation of inhibitory neurotransmission. Research groups have also examined its effects on enkephalin metabolism and BDNF expression in neuronal cell lines.
The compound is an approved pharmaceutical in Russia and is studied internationally as a tool compound for probing tuftsin-receptor pharmacology and inhibitory neurotransmitter system modulation in in-vitro neurological models.
