Oxytocin is a naturally occurring cyclic nonapeptide neurohormone synthesised in the hypothalamic paraventricular and supraoptic nuclei. Its structure features a disulphide bridge between cysteine residues at positions 1 and 6, forming a cyclic hexapeptide core with a C-terminal tripeptide tail. It is a prescription-only medicine in the UK; Vivera supplies it strictly as a research reagent.
In vitro, oxytocin is used as the reference ligand for the oxytocin receptor (OXTR) — a Gαq/Gαi-coupled GPCR expressed in uterine, mammary, brain, and cardiac tissue. Cell-culture studies have examined OXTR-mediated calcium signalling, β-arrestin recruitment, and receptor internalisation kinetics.
