KPV is the C-terminal tripeptide fragment of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH), comprising the residues Lysine-Proline-Valine. α-MSH is a tridecapeptide derived from the pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) precursor, and KPV represents the bioactive core responsible for many of the anti-inflammatory properties attributed to the parent molecule in cell-culture studies.
In cell-culture studies, KPV has been investigated for its interactions with the melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1-R) and its modulation of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) signalling — a central transcription factor in inflammatory cascades. Research in colonic epithelial cell lines has examined its effects on pro-inflammatory cytokine secretion and epithelial barrier permeability markers.
As a tripeptide, KPV is unusually stable compared with its parent molecule and demonstrates high aqueous solubility, making it a practical tool compound for in-vitro inflammation-pathway studies.
