Epithalon (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly; AEDG) is a synthetic tetrapeptide bioregulator developed from research at the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology in the 1980s and 1990s. It was designed as a synthetic analogue of Epithalamin, a peptide fraction isolated from bovine pineal gland extract.
In vitro, Epithalon has been investigated as a potential telomerase activator. Published cell-culture studies have reported its apparent ability to increase telomerase activity and elongate telomere sequences in somatic cell lines — findings that generated interest within the peptide-bioregulator and longevity-research communities.
The compound has also been studied in relation to epigenetic regulation — specifically, chromatin remodelling and modulation of gene expression associated with cell-cycle control in in-vitro ageing models, and effects on the Bax/Bcl-2 apoptotic pathway ratio in cell culture.
