DSIP (Delta Sleep-Inducing Peptide) is a nonapeptide first isolated from the cerebral venous blood of rabbits by Monnier and colleagues in the early 1970s. The peptide has historically been of interest in sleep-electrophysiology and neuroendocrine research; its specific receptor and precise mechanism of action have not been definitively characterised.
In vitro, DSIP has been studied as a modulator of several neurochemical systems, with research examining its apparent effects on somatostatin secretion in hypothalamic tissue slices, NADH oxidase activity in brain preparations, and modulation of opioid receptor binding in neuronal cell models. Its structure features an unusual N-terminal tryptophan and an internal aspartate residue.
DSIP continues to be referenced in the circadian-rhythm and sleep-biology literature as a historically significant neuropeptide probe, and is used as a tool compound in neuroendocrine regulation and stress-response pathway research.
